Halloween

Our last trick-or-treater....
Maddie dressed as a sort of haunted ballerina. The school had a Halloween carnival on a Friday night. The children went trick-or-treating down the hallways, stopping at each classroom door for treats. There were plenty of games.....
For October 31 our compound had a trick-or-treating event with teacher's children. Stuart helped to pass out candy.

International Week

In an international school it is common to have a celebration showing all of the countries that are represented in the student population. This week we are wearing national colors, proudly waving our flag and even having an international lunch buffet.

A little desert 4x4

First task is to let the air out of the tires...

The wet flats where the tides come in... We drove over these and through the dunes on the other side.

Our final destination was the inland sea... soft sand, clear water..

Censorship

In the event that you go to a website that has been deemed inappropriate, this is the message that you will get...

Doha Roads

This is the road we drive on to get to a major shopping center. Fortunately, we recognize when we're on this road because of the street lights. A typical shot of construction, mosques and minarets are on every block, and piles of sand.

Volleyball and World Cup Volleyball

Connor is part of the high school volleyball team. On Friday, we watched his team play against another local team.
Then after the game we went into town where there were championship games going on. We were given these tickets for free, although the price tag is a mere 10 riyals which works out to be only about $2.75 anyway.
We managed to make one of the finals games. Upon entry we were asked which team we were there to support and after a little bit of back of forth of not really caring which team we were watching, they let us sit anywhere. As you can see though, there were many seats to choose from.
We were watching Sao Paola against Azerbaijan. It was amazing to watch the power and skill of these players.
There were two tv broadcasts going on, a local Qatari one and I think the other one was in Russian.

Setting up the house part 2

Everything in Doha is a shade of brown. That includes the interior and exterior of all buildings. I usually like the warm tones of brown, but am having symptoms of color deprivation. So I've had to step out of my comfort zone and choose bolder colors for living spaces. We chose a green for the dining room.... and love the way it turned out.Yes, the master bedroom is a shade of orange. Hoping to get some white curtains to accent.
Maddie has a sage green for her bedroom....

Getting the house set up part 1

This is the kids living area... they have a dvd player, work table and a couple of couches. The main living room is sectioned off with sliding doors.....

Shipment Arrives

Two trucks roll up with plenty of boxes and furniture and then the unpacking begins.....

First Day of School

The Mall

The hours to go shopping take some navigation, especially if you want to shop on Fridays. Today we were eating breakfast at a restaurant, which had to close for the call to prayer. They let us pay our bill and continue to eat, but offered no service during this time. Some shops close their entrances and turn off the lights during call to prayer, but you can still go in. We're still working it all out.

This mall has a canal running through it. This is the same mall where Stuart plays ice hockey.

The local dress is women in black and men in white thobes.
