Seaside for Valentine's Day

Considering we had the day off because it was a national holiday (not Valentine's but sport's day), we decided to go to one of our favorite beaches with friends. Fuwairit Beach is about an hour northeast, near the very tip of the peninsula. We left around 9am and were thankful to get to the beach when we did because it gradually got more crowded throughout the day.

There is a sandbar out in the water, so you can only get about knee deep once you get out there.
The kids were happy to get wet and the water was warm.

In addition to cooking on an charcoal pit, the kids played games, collected shells and enjoyed the sand.

Amazing Race Doha

On Friday I participated in the Amazing Race which was organized by staff at the school. There were 17 teams of 4, so it was quite a lot of participants. Our first few tasks took place at the school -- digging through a sand pit, diving in the pool, building a gingerbread house, climbing wall... once we had completed a series of tasks we hit the road and went to a camel souk. At this site we had to find 6 puzzle pieces. It was interesting searching around cages or smelly and vocal camels. The puzzle was a photo of a road sign, so we hit the road again. Thanks to my gps we were able to find the right spot on the road and stopped to solve another puzzle. From there we headed out to the singing sand dunes (picture above) where we had to climb up. We could really hear the humming on the way down. Fortunately I'd been out there recently so it was easy to find. Other events included going to a beach and filling a container with mouthfuls of coconut juice, getting a picture with a man wearing a thobe, bowling for 200 points, one member dunking her head in fish guts to look for a plastic toy (thankfully not me), doing a dance, and naming tv show tunes. The race lasted about 7 hours and was a lot of fun, but exhausting!
